Synopsis

After a suicide attempt nearly costs him everything, La Jolla urologist David Ashford must rebuild his marriage, his confidence, and his standing as a physician under the watchful eye of the state medical board. Diversion meetings, painful confrontations with his own mortality, and a fragile return to the operating room slowly restore him — but healing comes hardest through relationships: his unwavering wife Emily, a dying novelist-mentor who believes David has a book in him, and Michael Geller, a fellow surgeon hiding his own history of collapse. Together they confront the patients whose suffering mirrors their own — a dialysis patient begging to die, a child who couldn’t be saved — until David is forced to ask the question he’s spent his whole career avoiding: what does he actually owe the practice of medicine, and what does he owe himself?
