When life is busy, self-care might be one of the last things you think about. After all, who has time to meditate after doing an hour-long workout and eating a kale salad?

But here’s the thing: You need self-care. Neglecting your mental health will eventually lead to burnout at work, school, home, and every other area of your life. And that’s not going to be good for you or anyone around you.

The good news is that there are plenty of out-of-the-box strategies for upping your self-care game that can fit easily into your overwhelmed schedule. And you’ll feel so much stress dripping off that you will look forward to these activities every day! Check out these unique self-care ideas from

1. Open Your Blinds

Once you wake up in the morning, open your blinds immediately, basking in the sunshine for as little as five minutes, and start your day off with a vitamin D boost. It can also help to balance your cortisol levels. Do this every day for a week and see if you can’t tell the difference!

2. Change Your Career

Significant life changes can provide a mental reset. If you are unfulfilled or overburdened at work, consider changing things up. Evaluate your skills and interests, and research various occupations that fit the bill.

If your new career requires further education, look into accredited online universities that will provide the type of program you need within your budget. For example, if you want to become a teacher, there are specific certification requirements, and you will need to obtain a teaching license. Fortunately, you can do everything you need through online courses that give you enough flexibility to balance all of your other commitments.

3. Start Forest Bathing

Forest bathing emerged in the 1980s and has recently become more common as a self-care technique. It essentially means taking walks or doing any other activities in nature. It can boost immunity, elevate mood, improve sleep, enhance creativity, sharpen concentration, and bust stress. While there are no stringent requirements for practicing forest bathing, experts recommend spending at least 120 minutes in nature per week.

4. Get a Pet

Pets have a way of comforting us in hard times and taking our minds off stressful situations. If you don’t have a furry companion, consider adopting one from a local shelter. Study after study shows that pet ownership can significantly reduce stress and anxiety while boosting serotonin and oxytocin.

5. Break from Work

Maybe you don’t want to change your career, but you are still overwhelmed at the office. Consider taking a self-care trip where you recharge and foster your mental health. Even if it is just going to the mountains or the beach for the weekend, focusing on your needs for a moment can do wonders for your wellbeing.

6. Ditch Your Device

Like most people today, you spend hours upon hours on electronic devices each day. While you may need your computer for work, be mindful of how much time you spend in front of the TV, on social media, or playing video games. Studies show that taking breaks from our devices can reduce stress and boost mood. Each night, ditch your devices for a couple of hours.

7. Declutter for a Few Minutes

It’s no secret that clutter brings stress. Take a few hours to tidy up your living environment and pare down your belongings. And come up with a simple daily routine to help you keep your clutter at bay.

8. Do a Weekly Face Mask

It’s well known that doing a face mask is excellent for your skin, but it can also benefit your wellbeing. There are plenty of hydrating face available at retail stores, but you can also use a DIY mixture from common household ingredients.

Just because you’re busy doesn’t mean you don’t have time for self-care. Try any or all of the ideas above to treat yourself and push the reset button on your mental health. You might be shocked by the positive impact a simple self-care practice can have on your life.
